Emilio Subía

Emilio is a multifaceted filmmaker from Ecuador whose work spans fiction and documentary, often exploring themes of sexuality, immigration, and family dynamics, bridging personal experiences with broader socio-political contexts. He was the cinematographer for Ciudad a la Espalda (2023), which premiered at the Guadalajara International Film Festival and received the Socio-Environmental Award. As an editor, his work has earned a Telly Award, a Webby Award, and a Vimeo Staff Pick.

His directorial debut, Ñaños (2022), premiered at the Tribeca Festival and has since screened and won awards at festivals across North America, Europe, and Latin America. His second short, Leo las olas, was shot in Northern California with support from Bay Area arts organizations. In 2023, he was awarded the Colin Higgins Youth Filmmaker Grant. He has also been a finalist for the Ida B. Wells Disrupting the Narrative Fund, a semi-finalist for the New Voices Filmmaker Grant, and a recipient of the NALIP Emerging Creators Scholarship. He is currently a fellow at the 2025 UFO Short Film Lab.

At Woodward, he will be working on developing his feature film Malvivir, a homoerotic dark comedy set in Quito, Ecuador.
