Gabriyèl Barlatier

Gabriyèl is a Haitian-American filmmaker. Her work centers intergenerational perspectives within the black immigrant woman’s experience. Through her diasporic lens, she touches on themes of displacement, longing, and becoming. As a writer and filmmaker, she’s attracted to the idea of gentle cinema, where black bodies are not in constant strife and suffering.

With a practice grounded in ritual, a mix of interests shape her artistic practice from performing arts training, to her documentary production experience, to spirituality. Gabriyèl is best known for her work as an independent producer and is making her way into the directing space. Her work as a producer, EP, and AP has premiered at Oscar-qualifying festivals such as Sundance, Tribeca, Blackstar, Hollyshorts, Chicago Film Festival, Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and more. Her directing work has won awards at Haiti International Film Festival and Roxbury Film Festival.

At Woodward, she will be working on developing her episodic series, Demwazèl, a coming of age story based on her mothers’ immigration journey set in 1980s Irvington, New Jersey.
